Bitter reason teen shot grandfather in tragic Adelaide incident
A “bitter” dispute over money was allegedly the reason why a 19-year-old shot his grandfather twice before fleeing the scene and turning the gun on himself in Adelaide’s northeast.
Massimo Chesini shot his 81-year-old grandfather, Pietro Chesini, at a home on Liascos Ave at Newton on Tuesday night – with the elderly man rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
A woman from the same address, who was also a relative, was also taken to hospital with shock.
The teen’s body was later found on the banks of the River Torrens.
A “bitter family dispute over money” was behind the tragic double shooting, 7NEWS reported.
Assistant Police Commissioner Scott Duval said the firearm used in the incident, which was licensed, was found next to Massimo’s body, but couldn’t detail the type of gun used on the incident or explain how he came to possess the weapon.

“It will form parts of the coroner’s investigation,” Assistant Comm Duval said.
“Enquiries are continuing around the security of that firearm.
“This is a very traumatic circumstance. It is a family member that has been involved in this and absolutely our hearts go out to them in a very difficult circumstances.”
Neighbour Christopher Nettle-Jarratt, 20, told NCA NewsWire he heard two gunshots around the time of the shooting.
“This area is known to have fireworks so every now and then you hear a bang but they were definitely not fireworks. They were a lot louder,” he said.
“I couldn’t believe it … It (the police presence) was crazy. I walked outside and I was told to get back inside so when I was watching from the window and thought, ‘this must be serious’ to have the whole street packed and have the SWAT team called in.”
Another neighbour, Shawn Wu, 39, said he was only alerted to an incident after he saw police outside of his home.
“I didn’t see too much because I wasn’t allowed to go outside,” he said.
“(The police) were here from about 4.30pm until about 9pm.”
SA Police have also launched an internal investigation, after a police officer’s gun was accidentally discharged while arresting another man, 53-year-old Wayne Hammett, at the scene. He was charged with hindering police.
An officer was injured during that incident.

“I can say that discharge of a firearm was not intentional and an internal investigation is currently being conducted in relation to the circumstances surrounding that,” Assistant Comm Duval said.
Mr Hammet was released on police bail, and told 7NEWS the gun was pointed at him but “I didn’t let him contact with me because I kept going back and grabbing it”.
